Glossary of terms:

Auditing: Scientology® counselling, taken from the Latin word audire which means “to hear or listen.” Auditing is a very unique form of personal counselling which helps an individual look at his own existence and improves his ability to confront what he is and where he is.

Auditor: a minister or minister-in-training of a Church of Scientology. Auditor means one who listens, from the Latin audire meaning “to hear or listen.” An auditor is a person trained and qualified in applying auditing to individuals for their betterment. An auditor does not do anything to a preclear, he works together with the preclear to help the preclear defeat his reactive mind.

Auditor's Code: a set code of conduct of an auditor.

Beingness: the assumption or choosing of a category of identity. Beingness can be assumed by oneself or given to oneself or attained. Examples of beingness would be one’s own name, one’s profession, one’s physical characteristics, one’s role in a game – each or all of these could be called one’s beingness.

Case: a general term for a person being treated or helped. It is also used to mean the entire accumulation of upsets, pain, failures, etc., residing in a preclear’s reactive mind.

Case action: a particular step done in a session with an auditor.

Case state: the state or condition of the preclear at any given time.

Case supervision: the supervision or overseeing of auditing by a highly trained auditor who is also trained in the technology of supervising auditing. The Case Supervisor reviews all auditing sessions done by auditors under his charge. His purpose is to see that the technology is standardly applied for the greatest possible benefit for the preclear.

Charge: harmful energy or force contained in mental image pictures of experiences painful or upsetting to the person, which is handled in auditing.

Claims Verification Board: an official group within the Church of Scientology International which facilitates refund requests.

Clear: a highly desirable state for the individual, achieved through auditing, which was never attainable before Dianetics. A Clear is a person who no longer has his own reactive mind and therefore suffers none of the ill effects that the reactive mind can cause. The Clear has no engrams which, when restimulated, throw out the correctness of his thinking by entering hidden and false data.

Dianetics: comes from the Greek words dia, meaning “through” and nous, meaning “soul.” Dianetics is a methodology developed by L. Ron Hubbard which can help alleviate unwanted sensations and emotions, irrational fears and psychosomatic illnesses (physical upsets caused by the mind). It is most accurately described as what the soul is doing to the body through the mind.

E-Meter®: short for Electropsychometer, a specially designed instrument which helps the auditor and preclear locate areas of spiritual distress or travail. The E-Meter is a religious artifact and can only be used by Scientology ministers or ministers-in-training. It does not diagnose or cure anything. It measures the mental state or change of state of a person and thus is of benefit to the auditor in helping the preclear locate areas to be handled.

Engram: a recording made by the reactive mind when a person is “unconscious.” An engram is not a memory – it is a particular type of mental image picture which is a complete recording, down to the last accurate detail, of every perception present in a moment of partial or full “unconsciousness.”

Enturbulence: turbulence or agitation and disturbance.

Evaluate: tell someone what to think about themselves or certain circumstances.

Floating needle: a rhythmic sweep of the needle on an E-Meter dial at a slow, even pace, back and forth, back and forth. A floating needle means that the charge on a subject being audited has dissipated, and is one of the indications of a process being complete.

Mental Image Pictures: three-dimensional pictures which are continuously made by the mind, moment by moment, containing colour, sound and smell, as well as other perceptions.

OCA: an abbreviation for Oxford Capacity Analysis, a personality test.

Overrun: continue an auditing process or a series of processes past the point of completion.

Preclear: a person who is receiving Scientology or Dianetics auditing on his way to becoming Clear, hence pre-Clear. Through auditing he is finding out more about himself and life.

Process: an exact set of questions asked or directions given by an auditor to help a person locate areas of spiritual distress, find out things about himself and improve his condition.

Reactive Mind: that part of the mind which works on a totally stimulus-response basis, which is not under a person’s volitional control, and which exerts force and the power of command over his awareness, purposes, thoughts, body and actions.

Restimulation: the “awakening” of an old engram, which occurs when a person’s present environment contains enough similarities to the elements found in the engram to cause a reactivation of it. When an engram is restimulated, a person can experience similar pains and emotions to those contained in the original incident.

Scientology: comes from the Latin scio, which means “know” and the Greek word logos, meaning “reason itself or inward thought. Thus it means the study of wisdom or knowledge. It means knowing how to know and is the study and handling of the spirit in relationship to itself, universes and other life.

Session: an auditing session consists of certain elements: the preclear, the auditor, the process, communication, the Auditor's Code and the E-Meter. In combination, they resolve the reactive mind.
An auditing session takes place in a quiet, comfortable and distraction free space. Usually the auditor and preclear are seated facing each other across a table or desk.

Standard tech: the exact Dianetics and Scientology technologies delivered as written by L. Ron Hubbard.

Training: the studying of Dianetics and/or Scientology technologies and their use.
